One of my favorite things about living and working in downtown Raleigh is that the community is small enough to continuously require new ideas, and supportive enough to embrace and sustain them. In Raleigh, you really can be the change you want to see in the world. That’s why, six years ago, after noticing a frightening lack of events combining bikes, music, and cats, I created the Hepcat alongside my pal Jared.
The scavenger-style bicycle race takes riders to various (super secret, super fun!) locations around downtown Raleigh. All proceeds from registration, raffle, and t-shirt sales go to SAFE Haven for Cats, the Triangle’s first no-kill shelter. Myriad Media has been a sponsor of the race since day 1. In both the tech and the shelter world, we call that an “early adopter.”
Myriad even created this video via our Campsite initiative to promote the race. Under the watchful eye of producer Alysse Campbell and director Kent Williard, we filmed my three-month old polydactyl kitten getting a strong shot (of milk) Slim’s, a downtown Raleigh watering hole. The rest of the time, we used a stuffed animal. Well, mostly. You’ll see.
Over the last six years, Hepcat has raised over $10,000 to sponsor low-cost spay and neuter services at SAFE Haven. We ride again on Sunday, August 28th at Oak City Cycling Project (Fun side note: We’ve made a video for OCCP, too!). If you’re not ready for the scavenger hunt, you can still enjoy the race-day festivities with a crisp Big Boss beer and the chance to win prizes donated by the fine folks at lucettegrace, Runologie, Merge Records, Boxcar Barcade, Phydeaux Raleigh, Mission Workshop, and OCCP. Tickets for this fabulous event can be had here.
Thanks, Myriad, for always supporting your employees and your community!
